A growing movement towards talking about domestic violence is taking place.  It started with the NFL, has expanded to other sports teams and now Hollywood has joined their powerful voice.  The clip below is from the 2015 Grammy Awards and was followed by Katy Perry performing a song about this crime.

HBO Documentary Private Violence Coming to Longmont

LEVI and Safe Shelter are excited to announce they will offer one of the first screenings in Colorado of the HBO Documentary Private Violence.  With all the recent attention to the issue of domestic violence brought to us courtesy of the NFL this timely film will answer a question many Americans have been asking: “why doesn’t she just leave?”  Join us as we bear witness to the complicated choices victims of domestic violence face. The film will be shown twice in October, once on 10/20 @ Front Range Community College at 4pm and once on 10/22 @6pm at the Longmont Public Library.  More info and RSVP here.

Stylists take on prevention role

Domestic violence is too complicated, prevalent and persistent for one individual or even law enforcement to end.  We need the help of the entire community.

Fifty local stylists stepped up to find out more about their role and arm themselves with information and resources to do their part this week.  Find out more about the national Cut It Out campaign and read this article about our local effort.

We were truly humbled by the willingness to ask and the genuine compassion displayed by all the stylists we trained.  Longmont is filled with great champions for ending abuse…are you one?

The link between animal and human violence

Not many of us realize that animal cruelty and neglect is connected to human violence.  In fact, over 30 years of research concludes that when animals are abused, people are at risk and when people are abused, animals are at risk.  Check out this short VIDEO on the topic. LEVI has been doing targeted outreach to local veterinarians and their staff this summer.   We’ve started a newsletter just for vets, provide training on the topic, and we’re about to launch new web pages especially for animal welfare workers.
